The company mission is to develop novel targeted therapeutics for the treatment of unmet or unsatisfied medical conditions including scarring and other fibrotic disorders.
Excaliard has licensed a novel patented technology with multiple therapeutic opportunities in fibrosis. On the basis of extensive pre-clinical data with this technology, Excaliard filed an IND in April 2009 initiating three Phase 2 proof of concept studies in 4Q2009 evaluating its lead compound, EXC 001, in improving the appearance of skin scars following surgery. Enrollment has been completed and initial results demonstrate dramatic efficacy for EXC 001 in all three trials. Complete results will be available by December 2010.
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports that well over 1.5 million cosmetic surgical procedures and over 5 million reconstructive procedures were performed in the US in 2009. In addition, there 20-40M general surgeries performed in the US each year. A preliminary 2010 market analysis indicated a high level of interest in EXC 001 as an anti-skin scarring therapy with a conservative projected sales of $750m in the US alone.
